ABU to launch 'Asiavision Song Contest'?
The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the EBU's main sister union, has announced it will launch a televised song competition, similar in format to the Eurovision Song Contest, at its 2012 General Assembly, to be held in Seoul.
The blueprints, unveiled in Delhi at the ABU's 2011 General Assembly, which ended today, outline an ABU-run 'television song festival' based on the talent-contest style of the Eurovision Song Contest.
Kenny Kihyung Bae, a senior producer at the International Relations Department of Korean EBU Associate Member KBS, will project manage the show and bring it to fruition. He said the future event did not yet have a name, although organizers had not ruled out the 'Asiavision Song Contest'.
Mr Bae, a fan of the Eurovision Song Contest, said he planned to come to Baku in 2012 to watch and learn, and that the eventual winner in Azerbaijan could be invited as a guest to the Asian event.
Asia has tried before to launch a continental talent contest decided by public vote, and it is hoped this time the dream can be made reality for the three billion viewers reached by the ABU's membership.
