Liettualaisesta musiikista kiinnostuneille: MANGO!!!!!

Viesti Kirjoittaja JVN »

One of today‘s most popular Lithuanian bands – MANGO – formed in February 1998 in Klaipėda. “Cactus Pro” producers Gintaras and Mindaugas Bendžiai and famous songwriter Žilvinas Liulys selected three singers Asta, Vika and Rima after big competition of young talents. And by now they never felt pity regarding that choice!

First MANGO single “Pavasariniai žiedai” (“Blossoms of the spring”) followed by great video reached the second position among all best selling singles and albums in Lithuania within a month. It became one of the biggest hits of that year.

Debut album “Balsas” (“The voice”) was released in January 1999 (more than 15 000 copies sold) followed by crushing ballad “Svetimi” (“Strangers”) that helped MANGO to become one of the brightest pop stars in Lithuania. Female trio won Best Debut nominations at both prestigious local music awards - “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 1998” (voted by public audience) and “Bravo 1998” (voted by music critics and experts).
In summer of 1999 was released second MANGO single “Vasaros lietus” (“Summer rain”) that became one of the hottest summer hits. Icing of the cake that year was second their album “Metų laikai” (“Seasons”) (more than 24 000 copies sold). It was followed by very successful tour across Lithuania. This time MANGO were very close to win in the Best Band and Best Album nominations at “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 1999” and “Bravo 1999”.

In July 2000 MANGO dropped to music market single “Švieski man vėl” (“Shine on me again”) which became first Lithuanian single that gained Golden Disc award. Popularity of the band became so big that everyone was shocked when trio announced in media about their “falling apart”. But it was only marketing campaign to promote new MANGO radio single called “Falling apart”, which was followed by the great video that later won Best Video award of year 2000.

In November 2000 was released third album “Amžinai tavo”. It gained Golden Disc (more than 11 000 copies sold), Platinum Disc (more than 21 000 copies sold) and Double Platinum Disc (more than 42 000 copies sold) awards and remained one of the most successful albums in Lithuanian music‘s history ever. MANGO were even more happy when they won in Best Band nomination at “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 2000” and in Best Pop Act nomination at “Bravo 2000”.

In July 2001 MANGO unleashed their fourth single “Karštos svajonės / Būk mano” (“Hot dreams / Be mine ”) that also gained Golden Disc award. On this single were featured two summer hits “Karštos svajonės” and “Būk mano”. Both of them became very popular as usual.

In November 2001 MANGO presented fourth album “Reikalingi žodžiai” (“Right words”) followed by such hits as “Saulės spindulėlis” (“Sun ray”), “Tu reikalingas” (“Need you”) and absolute public‘s favourite of Christmas period “Snaigės” (“Snowflakes”). “We were always used to sing about love, happiness, sorrow and other feelings that had been important to every common person. Maybe it’s secret of our unchanging level of popularity,” – said MANGO singer Vika after huge success of that album (Golden Disc and Platinum Disc awards). Once again band won in Best Band nomination at “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 2001”.

In July 2002 trio released fifth single “Opa” (“Hop”) with hit single “Opa” and bonus track “Vasara” (“Summer”) that gained MANGO another Golden Disc award. Obviously that was most experimental their release with influences of reggae and dance music. Also it was the last MANGO release under “Koja Records Group” flag.

In the end of year 2002 new record company “Melodija” released fifth MANGO album “Meilės liepsna” (“Flame of love”) that featured such hits as “Meilės liepsna” and another Christmas anthem “Balta gėlė” (“White flower”). Once again it brought Golden Disc and Platinum Disc awards to female trio. MANGO were winners in Best Lithuanian Top 20 Act nomination and in Best Album nomination (for previous album “Reikalingi žodžiai”) at “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 2002”.

But the beginning of year 2003 was very unfortunate for MANGO because lead singer Rima suddenly lost her voice. Verdict of Lithuanian medics was very clear – she needed voice strings surgery. And there were no quarantees that she would be able to sing after it.

Luckily the surgery and the reabilitation went great and after long period of silence MANGO returned with smashing hit “Alyvos” (“Lilac”) in the middle of the summer 2003. At the same time band announced that they decided not to release any single and concentrated on recording session of forthcoming album. Anyway “Alyvos” became one of the biggest hits of the year. Later followed another hit song “Drugelis” (“Butterfly”) and in December 2003 long awaited new MANGO album “100 dienų” (“100 days”) was released. As expected it gained Golden Disc and Platinum Disc awards. Third radio single from that album “Pumpurėliai” (“Buds”) as usual became big Christmas hit strengthening remarkable MANGO comeback. The band also were awarded with special prize of Public Symphaties at “Radiocentras muzikiniai apdovanojimai 2003”.
