Croatia to revamp Eurovision show in 2005
Croatian newspaper, Jutarnji list, has revealed details of plans to revamp the Dora song contest in 2005.
The Dora has been a mainstay of the Croatian Eurovision campaign for some years. In recent years, it has come under fire for producing poor results and being something of a closed shop. Changes in the last contest allowed newcomers to take part, but still failed to give Croatia the results they wanted.
In 2005, Aleksandar Konstadinov will take full charge of the contest and explained how the event will shape up to the newspaper. There will be no open competition in 2005, instead broadcaster HRT will invite record companies to nominate performers and will then chose 30 to be presented in a series of TV shows from early February. Only established acts with recording contracts will be allowed to take part. Croatian TV viewers will decide on 20 of the songs to go through to two semi finals.
Following the semi finals, ten songs will make the final, hosted by Nina B. For the past couple of years, viewers have been asked to decide on the language to be used at the Eurovision final. Songs at Dora were always performed in Croatian; often the English translations were completely new versions of songs. This will no longer be the case, as all finalists will present their songs in both English and Croatian at the 2005 Dora.
The semi final and final results will be a combination of 50% televoting and 50% from a three-person jury headed up by Konstadinov himself. There is a push to tempt more ‘alternative’ acts to take part in 2005. Any record companies signing up will be promised maximum media coverage.
Janos Roemer of HRT stated, “Our production team is preparing the plans for the contest, it should take place around the end of February or the first week of March next year.” After two years in the coastal resort of Opatija, there is talk of the show returning to the Croatian capital. “We have a great new studio here in our headquarters in Zagreb and there is a chance that we will somehow include it in this event,” said Roemer.
