Eurosong 2007
A couple of weeks ago, Karel Svoboda, the most successful Czech
composer of all time, killed himself, and, needless to say, the
papers won’t stop talking about it. This means that Eurosong hasn’t
much publicity so far, but, within a couple of weeks, it may be a
welcome distraction (hundreds of people have had nervous breakdowns
since Svoboda’s death, I kid you not), and it feels like the
country’s in mourning.
Maybe they’ll be in mourning in May, too. Let’s have a look:
----------------------------------------------------------
1) L.B.P. - Story of life
Think: Looks: I want money money, I want lots of lovely money. Music:
I can’t quite decide. Neither can she.
Background: Markéta Poulíèková to her friends, won something with the
frankly terrifying title 'Children International Nile Song Festival'
in 2003. Ditto the 'International Contest of Kazakh Song' in 2004.
Then entered Èesko hledá SuperStar 2 (you can guess what that is, if
you don't know already) in 2005, and didn't get anywhere. Even the
official book of the series says that the only interesting thing
about her was her hair colour. Ouch.
She’s clearly done something right, though, as she’s managed to
rename herself L.B.P. (erm, Little Black Peggy!) and release an album
of dance / rock / R ‘n’ B. Have just realised that I don’t know the
Czech for ‘to hedge one’s bets’. Some of her songs are also being
used in a film called Breathful, an ‘American-German gangster comedy’
which I certainly haven’t seen yet.
May or may not have had an affair with Petr Bende (see below). Is
there a web-site called http://www.realitytvshowpeople-reunited.cz?
Why: It has a lot of drums. She went to Sweden on holiday last year,
so she’ll make plenty friends in Helsinki.
Why not: It reminds me of Belgium 2000 for some reason. There’s
plenty ’oh look, I can sing’ action. It’ll give Claudia Beni ideas.
http://www.lbpmusic.cz/
----------------------------------------------------------
2) Petr Bende - Zaklínám své moøe (I’m imploring my sea. Or
something)
Think: Ten points from Latvia.
Background: Had his own band, and acted as a support act for some
very popular Czech & Slovak rock groups. And then he went on Èesko
hledá SuperStar 2. That’s not the order it’s supposed to happen in,
is it? Eventually came (a distant) second, but has had much more of a
career than the guy who won (and who’s singing Song 3). Two
successful albums, commercially and critically. Plenty guitars,
self-penned tunes, and slightly odd hair.
And not only was he probably sleeping with L.B.P., but he also had a
relationship with the girl who came third on the same series. It’s a
shame she’s not around as well, you’d probably be able to hear the
backstage catfight from Mars…
Why: it’s the sort of thing that’ll get played masses on Czech radio.
He’s a pretty down-to-earth guy. It could be from a Finnish final.
Oh, and ESC fans will hate it.
Why not: too low-key. Will probably bomb. Oh, and ESC fans will hate
it.
http://www.petrbende.cz/cze/
----------------------------------------------------------
3) Vlasta Horváth - Adios
Think: Darius without the Baby One More Time incident.
Background: third song, third Èesko hledá SuperStar 2 participant.
But, unlike the others, Vlasta won, helped by a scandal on the
previous series in which the gypsy contestant, widely seen as the
best singer, got voted off relatively early. Oh, and helped by Sales
of his two albums have been solid but not exceptional. The general
consensus is that he’s better than his material. And the media just
love to point out that Petr Bende is more successful now.
No sleeping around with fellow contestants (or with ESC fans, for
that matter), thankfully - he’s happily married and wants the world
to know it.
Why: it’ll stop the papers from giving him a hard time. It’ll be good
for the Roma community. It’s a perky enough number.
Why not: he hasn’t even bothered putting an accent on the ’o’.
There’s nothing Hispanic about the song at all. He doesn’t need
another chip on his shoulder.
----------------------------------------------------------
4) Lili Marlene - Žena ze Stínadel (Woman from Stínadly, wherever on
earth that is)
Think: Guri Schanke goes over to the dark side.
Background: must admit I hadn’t heard of them until this Thursday.
I’m not sure if they’ve released any records before their current one
(Tango desolato). What I do know is that they’ve been going since
about 2003, that they do a lot of gigs, and that the lead singer
spent some time performing in Argentina, which explains the vague
Evita look she has in various photos.
Oh, and they’re clearly not too hopeful about winning the final -
their website shows that they’re doing a show in Èeské Budìjovice on
May 10th…
Why: very dynamic. Interesting song. She sounds like a cabaret act.
She has a lower voice than DQ.
Why not: people won’t know what to make of it. The ending is a
complete anti-climax.
http://www.lili-marlene.com/
----------------------------------------------------------
5) Sámer Issa - When I am with her
Think: I’m, like, well from the ‘hood’.
Background: Yet another one from the Èesko hledá SuperStar factory,
Series One this time. Became the hot favourite to win after a version
of ‘Against all odds’ which would’ve done Gracia proud. Eventually
came third, and was promptly snapped up by producers who thought that
the Czech Republic needed its own Justin Timberlake. As far as I’m
concerned, they still don’t. Was singled out as the worst singer in
the Czech Republic by one of my students, and is usually seen
gallivanting around with vacuous Czech ‘models’. Two albums so far,
awaiting the difficult third one and currently planning a tour of
Russia. Which starts to make a bit more sense now.
Is credited with introducing R ‘n’ B to the Czech Republic. If what
he does is R ‘n‘ B, can he give it back? Meanwhile, thousands of
Czech housewives probably see him in the magazines and mutter ‘Oh,
he’s not the nice little boy he used to be’.
Why: at the press conference, you’ll finally get to ask him why he
sang ‘It’s raining men’ on Èesko hledá SuperStar. Some of you
probably fancy him. If he gets through, I can add him to that (short)
list of ESC participants I’ve walked past in the street.
Why not: He’ll try to give the girl from Poland his choco. His image
just doesn’t wash. His English was Agurbash standard last time I
heard.
http://www.isamer.cz/
----------------------------------------------------------
6) Helena Vondráèková - Samba
Think: Agnetha without Agnetha's 'issues'.
Background: The biggest-selling Czech female singer of all time, who
doesn't seem to have had a lie-in since about 1963, ignoring, of
course, that 7-year period after the Velvet Revolution when she
vaguely disappeared. Has covered dozens of British & American pop
hits, from 'Downtown' to '9 to 5' to 'I will survive' to, erm,
'Shaddap your face', which really has to be heard to be believed.
Also, somehow managed to make some damn good pop albums in the 1980s.
And she presents, she stars in movies, and she gives impromptu
concerts in shopping centres, one of which scared the living
daylights out of me in October 2005.
A recent survey shows that our Helka (59) has spent more money on
plastic surgery than any other (non-pornographic) celebrity in the
Czech Republic. Plastic or not, she's a bit of a national treasure,
i.e. officially everyone loves her, but you'd be hard pressed to hear
anybody under 45 admit it. Some people who won't be pleased if she
wins: dad, brother and niece Lucie (also a singer with a penchant for
inappropriate cover versions) - they haven't spoken to her since she
married a man they all hated in 2003.
I could go on (and some of you will know that I already have in the
past), but the rather wonderful http://www.raffem.com tells the story
in great depth. Do visit it, you won't be disappointed.
Why: She's a pro. Given that she'd have represented Czechoslovakia at
least four times given the chance, it seems only fair. And if she
wins, we'll get Arja in MF again.
Why not: She'll get drawn next to Norway. She’ll cover all the other
entries. And if she misses the final, we'll never see the Czechs
again. For those of you in Britain, she’s quite likely to describe it
as a f*****g liberty when she loses, which could be fun.

ESCNationin keskustelusta:
Helena Vondracková NOT participating in the Czech NF - details.
Posted by Stefan on 27 Feb, 18:31:00
Ceska Televize (CT) has confirmed that Helena Vondrackova will not participate in the NF, neither with Samba nor with Ha Ha Ha, released earlier today.
In a statement on their website, it is claimed that Helena's management company did not want to sign the necessary contract with CT. The reason for their refusal is that CT chose to select the song for Helsinki by SMS voting only, with a maximum of 20 SMS per mobile number (SIM card).
Helena's party however insisted on the involvement of a professional jury, which was refused by CT during negotiations, also pointing at the fact that ESC itself does not use juries anymore either. They will also use the 20 SMS maximum voting limit for ESC semi and final.
After no agreement could be reached, Helena withdrew from the competition. CT say they accept that decision, but also emphasise that it is basically a song contest, not a singer contest and that they want a broad public to give the chance to have a say in the voting.
