Results of the Finnish preselection translation contest 2009
Time's up and we have the results. The top four stood apart from the rest right at the beginning of the voting and never looked back. The final placings, however, weren't found out before the last stages.
And this is what we ended up with:
UFOPOLI - Bringer of Dawn 62
Timoteus - The End Is Nigh 53
nkorppi - Southwest to Citadels 50
4) Timoteus - Colonizing 49
5) UFOPOLI - Fantasy 36
6) Huilumies - Venus Light 29
7) Nata - Love 28
8) TOMItu - By the Sea 24
9) TOMItu - Venus Number Third 14
Thank you to everyone for participating, congratulations etc.!
This first edition of the translation contest was dominated by local veterans but I hope this will become a tradition and next year also attract some international participants, as this turned out to be such an enjoyable and refreshing contest. I personally don't really feel like going back to Finnish anymore
And here we have the victorious effort once more:
- - -
BRINGER OF DAWN (Kirkas kipinä) (English lyrics by UFOPOLI)
Darkness crept through the northern lands
Crushing life with its callous hands
Silencing every joyful note
Seizing me by the throat
Hope was remote
Nighttime enforcing its harsh demands
Some gave up on the losing fight
Some still fighting with all their might
Taking in brutal and ruthless blows
But when ending was close
Then something arose
Turning the tide with redeeming light
Bringer of dawn
Bringer of hope
Embrace this wayward soul
Never douse its bright spark of life
Sleep by the star and the candlelight
Bit by bit, life regained its hold
Though never like in the days of old
When I'm gone, in a thousand years
If the sky is still clear
My light perseveres
Healing the lands with its rays of gold
Bringer of dawn
Bringer of hope
Embrace this wayward soul
Never douse its bright spark of life
Sleep by the star and the candlelight
Bringer of dawn
Bringer of hope
Embrace this wayward soul
Never douse its bright spark of life
Sleep by the star and the candlelight
Always strong, never gone for long
I was born from the light
Born for the fight
Standing alone in the endless night

Re: Results of the Finnish preselection translation contest 2009
I forgot to comment on the results earlier (and so did everyone else, I see).
After translating a few hundred songs into Finnish, this contest was a breath of fresh air and I enjoyed it to the fullest. All I could have hoped for was more inspiring songs and more entries. These five songs weren't exactly the best the Finnish national finals can offer or the kind that you'd necessarily want to hear in English.
UFOPOLI isn't a particularly surprising winner but I'm sure he'll face a tougher opposition in the future. His victory is deserved. Bringer of Dawn is a great piece of lyrics set to a challenging song. Congrats!
I thought I had a shot at the bronze at best but I'm glad to be wrong. Colonizing was my own favourite of my two entries though. It was more fun to write.
Thanks to all participants and voters.

Next year, hopefully. The first time is always a first time.Timoteus kirjoitti:more entries.
Thank you. It was both great fun and great pain to write. More than in normal contests, it felt like writing a song of my own.Timoteus kirjoitti:Bringer of Dawn is a great piece of lyrics set to a challenging song. Congrats!
Apparently, it paid off to work on the more difficult ones that fewer people dared touch. I think Manala was easily the most difficult of the bunch, especially if you wanted to maintain the original rhyming scheme.Timoteus kirjoitti: I thought I had a shot at the bronze at best but I'm glad to be wrong.
Re: Results of the Finnish preselection translation contest 2009
Congratulations to UFOPOLi and the other medalists from me too!
Exactly. This is why I did not touch Kirkas kipinä, Meren or Rakkautta on, rauhaa ei, even when those were my favourite ones. But those who did touch them made mostly a very good job. These five songs weren't exactly the best the Finnish national finals can offer or the kind that you'd necessarily want to hear in English.

Congratulations to UFOPOLI!
Sadly, I didn't have time to prepare for this contest, otherwise I would have participated. Oh well, maybe next time. Assuming there's going to be a next time.
